Discord is where many communities live: servers split into text channels, voice rooms and video, free to use, with paid Nitro tiers for perks. People look elsewhere when they want their members' messages and accounts on a server they control, or a chat that isn't tied to one company's moderation and policy decisions. The self-hosted chat servers below cover channels, threads, direct messages and integrations.
Discord is free — but your data lives on its servers, not yours. These researched, open-source alternatives give you the same workflow on hardware you own — here's what each needs to run.
Leaving Discord means giving up its voice channels and screen sharing in one polished app, its bots and its network effect: your members already have accounts. Synapse is the Matrix homeserver, so any Matrix client works and you can federate with other servers, but it hosts accounts and rooms only, with the client chosen separately. Rocket.Chat is the most extensible all-in-one, with voice and video through marketplace call apps rather than built in. Mattermost is a Slack-style team chat; its default Docker image is the Enterprise build, which without a licence keeps only the latest 10,000 channel messages unless you switch to the MIT Team Edition image. All three are workspace chat first and community server second.

Fast and Slack-like vs. all-in-one platform.
Slack-style channels and threads vs. every message filed under a topic.
A Node.js forum from a Compose file with ActivityPub in the core, or the Rails forum that ships everything in one container.
The software is open-source and free to run. Your only cost is the server it runs on — often a few dollars a month, less than most SaaS subscriptions.
Most of these run comfortably on a small VPS — 1–2 GB of RAM is enough for a single-user or small-team setup. Each app's page lists its minimum RAM.
It depends on the app. The alternatives below cover the core workflow; polish and integrations vary, so check each one's stack and difficulty before you commit.
