DocuSign is the name most people know for getting a PDF signed: upload it, place the fields, send it, get back a sealed copy with an audit trail. What sends people looking elsewhere is the envelope allowance on each plan (five a month on Personal, 100 per user per year on Standard) and per-user pricing for a job many teams only do a few times a month. The self-hosted tools below do the same upload, place, send and seal loop on a server you run, with no envelope count.

DocuSign is free — but your data lives on its servers, not yours. These researched, open-source alternatives give you the same workflow on hardware you own — here's what each needs to run.

The alternatives

What you give up by leaving DocuSign

Leaving DocuSign means giving up its brand recognition with the people you send documents to, its integrations, and a service someone else runs and backs up. DocuSeal is the quicker install: one Compose file with Caddy for HTTPS, and it generates a self-signed signing certificate for you; reminders, SSO, bulk send, your own branding and embedding are in its paid Pro licence. Documenso keeps more free (embedded signing, reminders, custom branding) but needs PostgreSQL, SMTP, your own .p12 certificate and a reverse proxy before it signs anything. With a self-signed certificate, Adobe Acrobat warns that the signature cannot be verified. If a document needs a specific signature level, check the law that applies to it before assuming either tool meets it.

Common questions

Are these DocuSign alternatives really free?

The software is open-source and free to run. Your only cost is the server it runs on — often a few dollars a month, less than most SaaS subscriptions.

How much server do I need to self-host one?

Most of these run comfortably on a small VPS — 1–2 GB of RAM is enough for a single-user or small-team setup. Each app's page lists its minimum RAM.

Will I lose features by leaving DocuSign?

It depends on the app. The alternatives below cover the core workflow; polish and integrations vary, so check each one's stack and difficulty before you commit.
