Best Self-Hosted E-books & comics Tools
Self-hosted e-book and comic servers keep a library you own readable from a browser, an e-reader or a phone, instead of inside one store's app. The four picks here split by what they were built for. Calibre-Web is a browser front end for an existing Calibre library (the metadata.db Calibre writes), with OPDS, Kobo sync and send-to-e-reader. Calibre-Web Automated builds on it and adds an ingest folder, automatic conversion, metadata fetch, duplicate detection and KOReader sync. Kavita and Komga are media servers first: they read comic archives and manga as well as books, with reading lists, collections and multi-user roles, and each ships its own OPDS feed. Decide first whether your library is mostly prose books (the Calibre pair) or comics and manga (Kavita, Komga), then whether you want to keep Calibre as the thing that owns the files.
