Best Self-Hosted Alternatives to Algolia
Algolia is hosted search-as-you-type: send it your records, call its API, and get typo-tolerant, faceted results in milliseconds. It is priced on usage (search requests and records past a monthly allowance), so the bill grows with your traffic and your catalogue. The self-hosted engines below do the same job, with instant search, typo tolerance, filters, facets and geo search behind a REST API, on a server where more queries cost nothing extra.
Algolia is free — but your data lives on its servers, not yours. These researched, open-source alternatives give you the same workflow on hardware you own — here's what each needs to run.

What you give up by leaving Algolia
Leaving Algolia means giving up a global managed service, its dashboard for merchandising and analytics, and paid AI features such as AI ranking and synonyms on its Grow Plus plan. Both alternatives are an API your application integrates, not a finished search page. Meilisearch is MIT and keeps its index on disk in memory-mapped files, so the data can outgrow RAM, but replication and sharding need its Enterprise Edition, so a free install is a single node. Typesense is GPL-3.0 with Raft clustering in the free build, but it holds the whole search index in RAM on every node. Size for disk with Meilisearch or for memory with Typesense, and plan your own backups either way.

Common questions
Are these Algolia alternatives really free?
The software is open-source and free to run. Your only cost is the server it runs on — often a few dollars a month, less than most SaaS subscriptions.
How much server do I need to self-host one?
Most of these run comfortably on a small VPS — 1–2 GB of RAM is enough for a single-user or small-team setup. Each app's page lists its minimum RAM.
Will I lose features by leaving Algolia?
It depends on the app. The alternatives below cover the core workflow; polish and integrations vary, so check each one's stack and difficulty before you commit.
