Best Self-Hosted Search engine Tools

Self-hosted search engines replace Algolia, and at the heavy end Elastic Cloud, with search over your own data on a server you control. Three of the four picks here are APIs, not finished search pages: your application sends documents in and queries out. Meilisearch and Typesense overlap heavily on features — typo tolerance, facets, geo search, hybrid keyword-plus-vector search, per-tenant API keys — so decide on architecture first: Meilisearch memory-maps its index from disk and is MIT in its Community Edition, with replication and sharding Enterprise-only, while Typesense holds the whole index in RAM and includes Raft clustering in its GPL-3.0 build. OpenSearch is the Apache-2.0 fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana: a distributed Java engine with a query DSL, aggregations, k-NN search and a Dashboards UI, far heavier to run and aimed at log analytics and large indexes rather than product search. SearXNG is the odd one out, a metasearch engine that queries other search services and merges the results for people, not applications. Size the server to your searchable data before you pick.

Meilisearch

A search engine written in Rust for search-as-you-type over your own data: typo tolerance, filters and facets, geo search and hybrid keyword-plus-vector search behind a REST API. The Community Edition is MIT; the index lives on disk in memory-mapped LMDB files, so it does not have to fit in RAM.

OpenSearch

A distributed search and analytics engine with a REST API, a query DSL, aggregations, k-NN vector search and the OpenSearch Dashboards UI for exploring and visualising what you index: the community fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana. Apache-2.0 licensed, Java on Lucene with a Node.js Dashboards server; it runs as a JVM node (or cluster) plus a separate Dashboards container, and the bundled demo security config gives you TLS and an admin login out of the box.

SearXNG

A metasearch engine that sends your query to many search services and merges the results, without tracking or profiling its users. Run a private instance for yourself or a public one for others, and choose which engines it queries.

Typesense

A C++ search engine, billed upstream as an open-source Algolia alternative: typo-tolerant instant search, facets, geo search, vector and hybrid search with built-in embedding models, and scoped API keys for multi-tenancy. GPL-3.0, one binary, with Raft clustering for high availability in the open-source build. The whole search index is held in RAM.
