Linear is a fast hosted issue tracker for software teams: issues, cycles, projects and roadmaps, billed per user. What sends teams looking elsewhere is per-user pricing and keeping the roadmap in a vendor's cloud. The self-hosted trackers below cover issues, sprint cycles and boards on a server you run.
Linear costs about $120/year and keeps your data on its servers. These researched, open-source alternatives give you the same workflow on hardware you own — here's what each needs to run.
Leaving Linear means giving up its keyboard-driven speed, its tight GitHub and Slack integrations, and a polished native feel. Plane is the nearest in shape, with work items across list, board, calendar, table and timeline layouts plus cycles and modules; some AI and enterprise features are not in the self-hosted Community Edition. Huly combines issue tracking with chat and docs in one platform. OpenProject is more traditional project management, with work packages, Gantt charts and Scrum boards; LDAP group sync, SSO and resource management are Enterprise-only.

The software is open-source and free to run. Your only cost is the server it runs on — often a few dollars a month, less than most SaaS subscriptions.
Most of these run comfortably on a small VPS — 1–2 GB of RAM is enough for a single-user or small-team setup. Each app's page lists its minimum RAM.
It depends on the app. The alternatives below cover the core workflow; polish and integrations vary, so check each one's stack and difficulty before you commit.
