Self-host Plane
Open-source project management platform for tracking work items, running sprint cycles, and managing product roadmaps. The self-hosted AGPL-3.0 Community Edition ships work items across five layouts — list, board (kanban), calendar, table, and timeline (a Gantt-equivalent) — plus cycles, modules, saved views, and wiki-style pages; some AI and enterprise capabilities shown on Plane's hosted cloud offering are gated to paid plans and aren't part of the self-hosted Community Edition.
Key facts
Pick Plane when you want a modern Jira/Trello alternative — work items, sprint cycles, modules, saved views, and wiki-style pages — with a clean UI and an active roadmap. The tradeoff is open-core: some AI and enterprise capabilities Plane shows off on its hosted cloud product are held back from the self-hosted Community Edition, so verify a feature exists in the free build before you plan a workflow around it.

Install
Run these commands on your server:
# Plane — official setup script (Community Edition, creates ./plane-app compose stack)
curl -fsSL -o setup.sh https://github.com/makeplane/plane/releases/latest/download/setup.sh
chmod +x setup.sh
# setup.sh's default 'stable' release resolves via a GitHub API grep that GitHub's now-compact JSON breaks — pin a known-good release instead
sed -i 's/^export APP_RELEASE=stable$/export APP_RELEASE=v1.4.2/' setup.sh
./setup.sh install
./setup.sh start # → http://SERVER_IP (port 80 by default)What you take on
Plane's Community Edition is genuinely full-featured, but its edges are where the open-core split shows:
