This is the strangest comparison on this site, because the two sides share their most important component. Headscale is not a Tailscale competitor with its own apps and its own protocol — it is an open-source reimplementation of the one piece of Tailscale that is closed: the coordination server. Run Headscale and you keep using the official Tailscale clients on every device; they simply phone home to your VPS instead of Tailscale's cloud. The question here is not "which mesh VPN is better." It is: do you want to own the coordination server, and what does owning it cost?

The one closed piece

Tailscale's openness is real but has a boundary. The client daemons are open source across platforms (only the GUIs for proprietary operating systems are not), while the coordination server — the component that stores your network's device list, distributes keys, and enforces access policy — is closed source and available only as Tailscale's hosted service. That server is the product. It is also, for some self-hosters, the dealbreaker: a third party holds the map of your private network and sits in the control path of every device.

Headscale exists precisely for that dealbreaker. It reimplements the Tailscale control protocol as a single open-source Go binary, light enough for the smallest VPS you can rent (about 256 MB of RAM), with the usual mesh underneath: direct WireGuard connections where possible, relayed where not. Notably, Tailscale the company does not treat it as an enemy — it publicly encourages the project and employs a maintainer who contributes during work hours, while an explicit disclaimer keeps the two unaffiliated. That goodwill matters, because Headscale's whole model depends on the official clients continuing to accept a custom coordination server.

What you keep, what you give up

You keep the part of Tailscale that users actually touch. The apps, the login flow on each device, the it-just-connects behavior — identical, because it is literally the same client software. Access control uses Tailscale's ACL policy format too, so the skills transfer.

What you give up is everything wrapped around the hosted service. Headscale is a community project that deliberately targets personal and small-organisation use, and it says so plainly. Features land in the closed upstream server first and reach Headscale later, if at all — the community is reimplementing a moving target, and the newer or more enterprise-flavored the feature, the longer the lag. There is no first-party web UI: you administer the server over the CLI and config files, with community dashboards as separate add-ons. There is no commercial support, no SLA, and no one to call — upgrades mean reading release notes, and the project's own scope statement is an honest warning against betting a large organisation on it. Tailscale is a per-user subscription with a free tier that covers personal use generously — for a homelab, the hosted service can cost nothing and demand nothing. Headscale replaces the subscription with the flat cost of a tiny VPS plus your time: one small service to deploy, back up, TLS-terminate, and upgrade. As self-hosted control planes go it is about as light as they come — a single binary against SQLite, difficulty 3 out of 5, dramatically less to operate than a full-stack alternative like NetBird — but it is still a piece of infrastructure you are on call for, where before you were on call for nothing.

Which to choose

Choose Tailscale if you are a team that needs SSO management, support, and zero operations — or an individual for whom the free tier already does the job and the hosted control plane is not a concern. It is the better product by any conventional measure. Choose Headscale when the hosted control plane is the specific thing you refuse: you get the genuine Tailscale client experience with the network's brain on your own server, at the price of community-level support, a CLI-only admin surface, and features that trail upstream.
