Pick Tailscale when you want a private mesh that simply works and someone else on call for it — polished clients, a managed global relay fleet, nothing to operate. Pick NetBird when the control plane itself has to be yours — privacy, compliance, or per-user pricing that stops making sense as the team grows — and you are willing to run a real multi-service deployment to get it.

Tailscale is the product that made mesh VPNs boring, in the best sense: install the app, sign in, and every device can reach every other device, with NAT traversal and key management handled by someone else. NetBird is what you reach for when "handled by someone else" is exactly the problem — the same WireGuard-based mesh idea, but with the control plane running on your own server. This is not an open-source clone chasing a SaaS; it is a different answer to who should own the coordination layer of your private network.

The same idea, two owners

Both build a peer-to-peer WireGuard overlay: devices connect directly where they can, fall back to a relay where they cannot, and an identity-aware control plane decides who may talk to whom. With Tailscale, that control plane is a closed component of Tailscale's cloud. The client daemons are open source — the company is genuinely good about that — but the coordination server, the part that holds your network's map, keys, and policy, is proprietary and only exists as their hosted service. When a direct connection fails, traffic falls back to Tailscale's globally distributed DERP relays, encrypted end to end so the relay cannot read it.

NetBird publishes the whole stack. Clients, management API, signal server, relay, and the web dashboard are all open source, and all of it can run on hardware you control. Your devices use NetBird's own apps — not the Tailscale clients — and they answer to a coordination server whose logs, database, and uptime are yours. SSO comes along too: you wire the control plane to your own OIDC provider and gate network access behind your identity system, on your terms rather than a plan tier.

What the polish costs, what the ownership costs

Tailscale's operational cost is zero. That is the product. You will never patch its coordination server, never renew its TLS certificate, never wonder why the relay is down, and its clients are among the most polished in the category. The price is structural: a per-user subscription (with a free tier for personal use), your network's control plane in a vendor's cloud, and features metered by plan.

NetBird's cost is operational, and we will not undersell it. We rate it a 4 out of 5 difficulty for a reason — this site has installed it on a real VPS, and the self-hosted control plane is a genuine multi-service deployment: management, signal, relay, and dashboard behind a reverse proxy, with a handful of published ports and an identity provider to configure. It wants a reasonably sized server (about 2 GB of RAM) and an operator who will treat it like the piece of infrastructure it is. The step-by-step install guide walks through it, but "walks through it" is not "clicks a button."

When the math and the mandate flip

For a solo tailnet or a homelab, Tailscale's free tier is honestly hard to argue with, and plenty of self-hosters run it happily. The case for NetBird gets strong in three situations. Privacy or compliance: if the network map and device identities cannot live in a third-party cloud, a managed control plane is disqualified no matter how good it is. Cost at scale: per-user pricing is friendly at small counts and compounds as the team grows, while a self-hosted control plane stays one flat server bill regardless of headcount. And dependency: with NetBird there is no upstream company whose pricing change, acquisition, or policy shift can reshape your network — the whole system, clients included, is open source and in your hands.

Which to choose

Choose Tailscale if you want the best managed mesh experience and have no requirement that forbids a hosted control plane — for individuals and small teams it is the pragmatic default, and there is nothing to operate. Choose NetBird the moment the coordination plane itself must be yours — for privacy, for compliance, or because seat-based pricing has outgrown a flat VPS — and budget real setup effort for real ownership. Common questions

Is NetBird a drop-in Tailscale replacement?

Functionally it covers the same ground — a WireGuard mesh with SSO, access policies, and automatic NAT traversal — but it is not drop-in. NetBird has its own clients and its own control plane, which you install, host, and operate yourself. Plan a migration, not a swap.

Can I use Tailscale clients with NetBird?

No. NetBird is a separate project with its own apps for every platform; the Tailscale clients only speak to a Tailscale-compatible coordination server. If keeping the official Tailscale apps is the goal, self-host Headscale instead — that is exactly what it is for.

What does self-hosting NetBird save?

It replaces a per-user subscription with one flat-cost VPS, so the saving grows with every seat you add — and shrinks by whatever your own ops time is worth. For a solo tailnet Tailscale’s free personal tier is hard to beat; the math turns in NetBird’s favor as a team grows or when data-control requirements price the hosted option out entirely.

Is Tailscale open source?

Partly. The client daemons are open source (the GUIs for proprietary operating systems are not), while the coordination server — the part that holds your network’s state — is closed source and only available as Tailscale’s hosted service. NetBird publishes both halves.
